Critically acclaimed as a fresh and exciting theatre experience that sets the benchmark for contemporary Sri Lankan theatre, Colombo Colombo: the story of your coffin, is set to entertain audiences again on June 5 and 6 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre from 7.00pm onwards.

Colombo Colombo is a play based on four incidents that take place at four different locations within the city of Colombo.

First staged in August last year, this tragic-comic musical play written and directed by Indika Ferdinando is an experimental theatre endeavour based on a scholastic research paper written by Ferdinando and Saumya Liyanage which argues against the Aristotelian theory of the linear plot construction.

The play attempts to look critically at some of the influences that transform human relationships and lead them into conflict; the social and political system that constantly infiltrates those human relationships; and the collective indifference with which the public nurtures the system.

Saumya Liyanage, known for his award winning roles on stage and on the big screen is the lead male character in Colombo Colombo. Speaking about the play, Liyanage stated that Colombo Colombo takes a stab at at revolutionising theatre in Sri Lanka.

Speaking to Daily Mirror online, Liyanage said, ‘whether we’ve succeeded in doing this is tough to say, the critics think we have, and I personally think that Ferdi (Ferdinando) has taken a step in the right direction, and I’m proud to have walked with him through that journey.”

Colombo Colombo was staged at the South Asian Women’s Theatre Festival held in New Delhi and Mubai in February this year. Talking about the Indian experience, Liyanage said, “India was special. It was my first time performing to an international audience. I think I can safely say that being a part of this play feels like the turning point of my career.”

Getting back to the upcoming performance, Liyanage said, “It was a challenge for all of us, I play the old man and narrator, Anasuya (the lead female) plays four characters. All the actors play the guitar, sing, dance and play multiple roles all on one stage, in one play. It’s just us 8 actors and our guitars.”

This being the final performance before he leaves to follow a PhD in Australia, Liyanage stated: “When you stagnate it kills your soul, drains it away bit by bit and I don’t like that feeling. So I’ve got to go for now but I will miss this country because I’ll miss my people.”

Meanwhile, Indika Ferdinando, lecturer at the University of Visual and Performing Arts in Colombo and recipient of several state awards for best playwright and director, says that future works in the pipeline are set to follow a similar experimental path. Commenting on his style of work, Ferdinando said: “Exploring the unknown is an essential part of my scholastic research and my theatre practice”.

He also added that “Over the past decade there has been very little experimental work done in the local theatre. By conforming to dialog plays that hold up a mirror to life, we forget the potential of theatre as a unique and limitless medium. People come to the theatre hoping to to be excited. When they don’t find that excitement, they go in search of it in other media. Can we blame them? I say we move beyond convention. The time has come to reinvent theatre in Sri Lanka. ” (KA)

So far, yet so near : Chilean drama probes contemporary social issues

A novel drama "Paulina" based on a popular Chilean play will go on the boards at the Mayashakthi Theatre next week.

This drama directed by emerging dramatist Dharmajith Punarjeewa is based on " Death and the Maiden" by well-known dramatist Ariel Dorfman and focuses on contemporary social issues.

Dorfman's drama features the abductions, killings, political assassinations and abuses that occurred in Chile during the tenure of infamous Chilean dictator Augesto Pinochet. "His drama is woven around a middle-aged women named Paulina and discusses the numerous issues engulfing the society," Dharmajith says.

He said that drama relates well to the Sri Lankan society which is even today facing many social and cultural issues.

"Amidst peoples' continued struggle to adjust to a market driven society in an open economic system, the drama talks about the issues faced by people.

The cast includes four characters - Paulina played by Anoma Jinadari who won the Best Actress Award at the Singapore Film Festival, Anura de Silva plays Roberto and Samantha Wijesinghe plays Girardo.

"In a fast-changing and highly competitive system, the single unit called family faces all kind of clashes, difficulties and adversaries. This in turn has an impact on the society as a whole," added Dharmajith.

Dharmajith's drama underlines the theme of surviving in such a society while safeguarding the humanity. "The lack of humanity in contemporary society is a very vital factor affecting the progress of the society and this should be paid highest attention by everyone. Specially, artistes have a huge responsibility in this respect," he added.

Dharmajith's last play " Hiroshima " considered as an anti-war play was staged in 1997, followed by Yerma (an English production) in 1999. He won nine significant awards including the Best Play and Best Actor for his drama " Lihini " at the State Drama Festival in 1993.

However, Dharmajith was very critical of present-day dramatists. "There is no setback in the drama field, the setback falls on the part of those who create dramas. A dramatist should have a vision and present a creation that caters to the society." He stresses that dramatists should focus more on contemporary issues in their creations to make an impact on society.

"This is lacking in the drama circle today. We must pay more attention to issues and problems in contemporary society if we are to make dramas that appeal to the people." Dharmajith and his Mayashakthi Theatre has always taken up issues pertaining to contemporary society. "You must cater to the very same society that you are living in today," he noted.

The Sinhala translation of the drama is by Sagara Chandrasiri while music is by Schubert (Keith Anderson), choreography by Samarasiri Kandanage.

The drama will be staged at the Mayashakthi Theatre Nugegoda at 3.30 pm and 7.00 pm on September 13 and 14.

Playwright and actor Dharmajith Punarjeewa’s latest book ‘Stanislavski-Nalu Kala Shilpa’, a handbook for those interested in acting was released recently.

Having released and reprinted his maiden book ‘Rupanavedaya’, Dharmajith’s second book under a related theme is a collection of 169 short chapters based on statements made by world renowned Russian stage director Konstantin Stanislavski.

The chapters provide important hints on acting in stage, cinema and many other areas related to acting.

Presented in short and simple style, the book will also be of assistance to students who study theatre and drama and researchers in addition to those who yearn to learn the art of acting in depth.

Published by Mayashakthi Ranga Shilpa Shalikawa the book is priced at Rs. 1000. Dharmajith started his theatrical production with ‘Kalaya’ (Time) in 1992 and went on to make fourteen stage plays, some of which were award winners.

The English production of ‘Sinhabahu’ based on Professor Ediriweera Sarachchandra’s legendary play under the same title was his last direction.

To some being an actor means money, prestige and recognition, to others it is a special art that needs to be practiced, mastered and taken to greater heights in the film world.

Dharmajith Punarjeewa like many others too wanted to be an actor. However, when he tried to find a school, to learn this art, he found that none existed. His attempt at trying to locate a book shop that could sell him a book on the art of acting failed miserably. It was at this point that Punarjeewa was struck with the idea that he should take the initiative to write a book on acting, especially for those amateurs who would like to read, learn and master the correct method of acting.

This was the result of his book Rupana Vedaya and today that is one of the most important books sought by prominent and amateur film actors and actresses in the country.

Speaking to The Sunday Leader, Punarjeewa said he was initially sad when he saw the standard of the hundreds of teledramas aired on television. "If you were to switch on the TV channel and continue to watch even five teledramas for a day, you would realise that the characters in all these teledramas are basically acting a similar role. But for the audience who doesn't understand what acting is all about, watching a teledrama is a form of entertainment," said Punarjeewa.

For many amateur actors and actresses, earning money rather than trying to improve their knowledge of acting has become important today. "These actors and actresses prefer to live a comfortable life with the money they earn from teledramas rather than concentrate on winning an award," explained Punarjeewa.

According to Punarjeewa, in the US the sole aim of famous filmstars is to concentrate on winning an Oscar and bring up the standard of the film industry .

"I wanted to be an actor but I felt that I should first study and understand the art of acting before I really get involved in the practicals," explained Punarjeewa.

According to Punarjeewa, from his experience and research while gathering information for his book he has learnt that the best method for acting is the realistic form. The Sinhala theatre and cinema have completed 50 years. But what have the prominent film artistes done to uplift the standards of this important industry," says Punarjeewa.

Rupana Vedaya is probably the only option left to uplift a dying film and teledrama industry. Punarjeewa's book deals with Konstantin Stanislavski's acting method. "This is the method used by popular film stars in the States. In Rupana Vedaya I have taken examples from Sinhala films and explained what an amateur needs to know when starting on a career in acting. An amateur can then watch the film and understand what I am trying to say," added Punarjeewa.

In Rupana Vedaya, Punarjeewa talks of the acting methods of Swarna Mallawarachchi, Anoja Weerasinghe, Malini Fonseka, Joe Abeywickrema, Vijaya Kumaratunga, Ravindra Randeniya and Gamini Fonseka. Part of the book also explains acting methods of prominent international film stars and directors like Marlon Brando, Sir Laurence Oliver, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Lauren.

According to Punarjeewa, Brando was one of the first actors to adopt Stanislavski's acting method and is today one of the most famous and successful actors in the world.

The launch of Rupana Vedaya on May 29 has had a good response with the first copy being bought by Ravindra Randeniya

Anoma Janadari plays Paulina in Death and the maiden

"But do you want to know the truth, the real, real truth?" the Doctor asks. Paulina listening from the bedroom gasps when she hears him, his voice, his laugh (he snorts when he laughs) and "the real, real truth". She finds other things, like his smell, the fact that he likes to quote Nietzsche "I think it was Nietzsche..." and that he has a tape of Schubert's Death and the Maiden in his car. The music which "The Doctor" played during the torture and rape...

This is an excerpt from "Paulina" the Sinhala version of Ariel Dorfman's play "Death and the Maiden", which will be out at the Bishop's College Auditorium on the 28th December, at 6.30 pm.

Translated by Sagara Chandrasiri, presented by the Maya Shakthi Theatre Foundation, the play will star Best Actress in the Singapore International Film Festival for her role in "Flying With One Wing"-Anoma Janadari as Paulina, Dharmajith Punarjeewa as Girardo, Anura de Silva as Dr. Roberto and Janakie Edirisinghe as Paulina's Mind. Directed by Dharmajith Punarjeewa to the background music of Schubert who indirectly plays a big part in the play, it is a political and psychological complex battle of wills amongst three characters in post revolutionary Chile after the rule of Dictator Augusto Pinchet.

The trio in question is made up of Paulina, her husband Gerardo and Dr.Roberto-a seemingly friendly stranger who provided Gerardo with a ride home after a car breakdown.

The trouble begins when Paulina claims to recognize Roberto's voice, and accuses him of being the unseen doctor who had subjected her to horrific torture during her days as a prisoner of the country's former government. Roberto flabbergasted, denies any knowledge of such events, but Paulina is determined to have her revenge. The uncertain Gerardo finds himself caught in the middle, forced to decide if his wife is telling the truth or reacting irrationally due to her past trauma.

The confrontation and shifts in power between the three inevitably raises issues of justice and revenge, especially in relationship to the punishment of war criminals.

Limited cast

The setting is bare. Just a sofa, a chair and a table. The play focuses primarily on the acting, which too has a limited cast of just four characters, Dorfman's three and the additional character of Paulina's Mind, which further depicts her inner turmoil.

It is a play about betrayal and terror. Justice and Vengeance. It is about women. Their daily suffering and torment as a result of emotionally lifetime scars undergone through war crimes of torture, rape and medical experimentations. It is a daily haunting of their past which makes it difficult for them to come to terms with their present life, their memory and their identity.

Anoma's performance as Paulina is powerful, tender, angry and painful. The torture she goes through, the brief feelings of doubt, and then the dawning that this is the man she wants. At least that's what she believes. She's torn between justice and vengeance, but most of all she wants the Truth. She wants redemption for what she has suffered, and wants to know Why?

Janakie who plays Paulina's Mind, brings about these multitude of emotions, with violence and passion. Her movements depending on Paulina's quick shifting moods, change from quick rapid movements to slow, almost statue like stillness. Paulina's rape and torture is brought about in a frenzy like dance. Her confusion, hurt and pain, in a more tender, gentle grace. Janakie and Anoma intermingle their roles, with a chemistry which makes the mind and body one, coordinating and combining the physical and emotional pain.

Girardo, Paulina's husband, played by director Dharmajith Punarjeewa is a character with an uncertain conscience. He is the play's voice of sanity. Formerly a student opposition leader, he is now a famous lawyer, appointed by the newly elected president to head up a committee investigating the military human rights abuses.

The final character, the "good" Doctor Roberto is a tantalizing mix of innocence and malice. Anura de Silva speaking of his role, says "Roberto was a good man who turned evil due to succumbing to the temptation his environment offered him".

"Paulina" is a battle between our thirst for revenge and the voice of conscience that call us to a higher form of justice. In the end, we're meant to see that, yes, brutality begets brutality, and to victimize our victimizers is to sink to their level.

Drama and dance her forte - Janaki Edirisinghe Hill

"I have two pastimes; drama and charity,"says Janaki Edirisinghe Hill. She can be introduced as a dancer, dramatist, social worker and one of the best production managers in many fields. More than anything else she is a lover of children. Although she is yet to be a mother, 'aunty Janaki' is adored by many little ones and teens.

Janaki's first appearance on stage was for an uninvited performance when she was about five or six years old.

"Once there was a 'Devaduta Perehera' in our village, Arakawila, Ingiriya. Many dance items took place from time to time, and in the evening, some little girls performed a beautiful 'Pahatharata' dance on stage. When I heard the 'Pahatharata' drum beat I couldn't resist, and somehow got on to the stage and started dancing with them. I was smoothly carried away and handed over to my mother," she giggles.

Janaki's mother was astonished about her youngest and the naughtiest among her nine children. She registered her Tom boy to 'Ruhunu Kala Kavaya' to learn 'Pahatharata' dancing under the renowned dancer Kalinga Obeywanse. Later Janaki mastered her dancing talent under Sedaraman Gurunnanse of Handapangoda. "I still cannot resist the 'Pahatharata' drum beat. My pulse begins to race and my limbs begins to shake as if I have had an electric shock," she laughs.

Janaki comes from a middle class village family. Her father was an ex-army man. The boys took after the father while the girls towed an academical line. But, after passing the O/Ls with flying colours, Janaki took a break from her studies and she made a change.

In 1993, in commemoration of the late celebrated dramatist Dhamma Jagoda, his wife Manel Jagoda and Dharmajith Punarjeewa founded the 'Maayashakthi Foundation'. Janaki joined with them and became one of the 150 drama enthusiasts of the troupe. The drama foundation was an university of life for the village girl.

At one moment she was on the stage rehearsing her dialogues, the next moment she would be designing costumes. And followed it up with drama production and then even cooked a meal for the drama group.

She sold tickets for a drama show while running to the Cultural Ministry to get some approval or to get an advertisement or sponsorship for it. 'Lihini', 'Piriven Piyuma', 'Hiroshima', 'Yerma' and 'Paulina' were the dramas she took part while being with 'Maayashakthi'

Janaki became a freelance journalist when she began contributing to 'Kasaaya', the paper for visual and performing arts issued by 'Maayashakthi'. " 'Kasaaya' was sold on the road by hand by us (the whole group) all over the island. It was really interesting. We gained so much of experience by moving and conversing with people right from the top to the other extreme.

Among many memorable incidents, the most impressive and monumental happening in Janaki's life was, the random meeting she had with Peter Hill, the Chief Executive Officer of the Sri Lankan Airlines who later became her life time partner.

Janaki has been a sports lover too. Netball and high jump were her favourite school day sports. She even won the all island second place for high jump. The days have passed so soon changing her destiny.

She is still a Tom boy! Her active and energetic spirit seems to increase day by day. Yesterday's village girl is today skiing on snow hills at winter sports clubs in France with her husband. Golf is among her other favourite sports.

Janaki did a short drama course in Greek Theatre in Cypress, and had a month's training at the Ballet Dancing School of London. After her hectic schedule with 'Maayashakthi' for twelve years, Janaki has decided to take a brief break.

Her exposure to theatre enabled her to make her first production, 'Expression of Life 2003', a blend of dancing modes of 'Pahatharata' and ballet at the Little Theatre, Borella last year. Her second production will be a play 'Devlova giya Mal Kekulu' with the children of the Noguchi Boys Orphanage at Pepiliyana where she does some charity work as the dancing and drama instructress. "They love me and I adore them. Understanding the mind of a child is a hard yet a simple task.

There are many heart rendering and anguished stories affiliated to the lives of these children. My play is based on a few true stories of theirs. It's hard to believe that this world is so cruel. Parents should be blamed for their idiotic decisions and crude negligence which lead their innocent children to hell," says Janaki who has been a foster mother nursing the orphans with love and care.

Janaki begins her daily routine after meditating a few minutes in the morning. She loves to listen to soft meditative music any time of the day. Reading books on arts is her leisure. Producing a documentary or a short film on child psychology is one of her dreams. Publishing a collection of short stories she has written and producing another musical dancing show next year are also among her hopes.

And social service is the favourite pastime of both Mr. and Mrs. Hill. Simplicity is their faith.

"Take care of your children. Make this world a fearless and beautiful place for the little ones to grow up happily," pleaded Janaki when concluding.
